Christian, Summer Law Clerk, Wraps it up

thanksblogSC Appleseed is lucky to have amazing law clerks and interns that help us maximize our impact and work on issues facing low-income South Carolinians. Christian was our summer law clerk and he took a minute out of his last week on the job to reflect on the experience.  Here’s what he had to say:

Working with SC Appleseed this summer has opened my eyes to the amount of positive influence an organization can have on the local community and the importance of assisting those in need. The SC Appleseed team has proven to be an effective collection of talented, motivated, and caring individuals who tackle serious legal and social issues on a daily basis. South Carolina and its citizens would have a better sense of justice if other law firms and groups replicated the work done by this organization.

Throughout this clerkship I have been exposed to a variety of legal and regulatory issues facing our community and been mentored on the most effective and successful methods used to resolve them. Some of theses issues include how to provide legal services for veterans, working with state legislators on the “Ban the Box” initiative, and ensuring the community’s voice is heard in hearings about SCE&G’s proposed rate hike. I was also able to fine tune my researching skills by providing SC Appleseed attorneys with information and briefs dealing with prisoner reentry, the Homeless Court program in Columbia S.C., and the difficulty for those with Deferred Action immigration status under DACA in obtaining professional licenses. I also thoroughly enjoyed working with the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission in their efforts to create a online website portal that will ultimately provide greater access to legal help for South Carolinians.

My clerkship at SC Appleseed has ultimately taught me how to identify the underlying issues of the larger social problems that face our society. It has allowed me to apply the skills learned in law school to resolve these problems and further prepared me for a career in public service. I admire those I worked with for their passion and hope SC Appleseed continues their success in advocating for low-income individuals.

Thanks for a great summer, Christian!  We are so grateful to for all you did this summer to make a difference for low-income South Carolinians!
