Voting in SC: Your Vote! Your Voice!

As we near the November midterm elections, it’s important that you begin to plan now to ensure your registration is up-to-date, and you have all the resources you’ll need to have your vote count.

Here are some of the key things you need to know (Español abajo):
1. You must register at least 30 days prior to an election.

2. In SC, you can register like a new voter after finishing a felony sentence, including any probation or parole time.

3. You are required to show valid Photo ID in order to vote. See #7 below for a list of acceptable forms of ID.

4. Register. You can register online, print forms and check your status at www.scvotes.org. Register in person at your county board of voter registration. Make sure you register again after you move.

5. Absentee Voting. You may be eligible for absentee voting. Visit www.scvotes.org/absentee-voting for complete details and to request an absentee voting application.

6. Polling hours. Polling places are open 7AM-7PM on Election Day. If you are in line at 7PM you will be allowed to vote. It is your right!

7. The Right Photo ID. You will be asked to show one of the following photo IDs to vote:

  • SC Driver’s License
  • SC DMV ID Card
  • SC Voter Registration Card (with photo – see #8)
  • Federal Military ID
  • US Passport

8. FREE SC Photo Voter ID. To obtain an SC Voter Registration Card with photo, take proof of residency (current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck or other government document) to your county voter registration office and they will issue you a FREE photo voter ID card. Take that ID with you to vote.

9. Students. You may register at your campus address if you view it as your home OR at another address where you intend to return. A 17-year old who will be 18 by election day can register to vote—even in the primaries.

10. Before You Vote. Check your polling place & see a sample ballot at www.scvotes.org.

11. Inside the Poll. Take a list on paper or your cellphone to help you remember your choices. On an electronic ballot, carefully review your choices before submitting. If you make a mistake on a paper ballot, ask for a new one.
