SC Appleseed Response to Senate Parliamentarian’s Ruling to Exclude Immigration Reform from Budget Process

This weekend saw a setback in the nation’s fight for a more humane and common-sense immigration system. For the last few months, SC Appleseed has been working with partner organizations and individuals across South Carolina to push Congress to include a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients, persons with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and agricultural workers living in the United States in the soon to be voted on budget resolution.

Over the weekend, the Senate Parliamentarian, who decides which legislation is relevant to the budget process, ruled that legislation that would create this pathway to citizenship could not be included in the budget process, despite data showing the huge economic benefits it would have for our nation.

We will not be deterred in this setback, and we are more determined than ever to put the pressure on Congress to pass meaningful immigration reform and grant longtime immigrant residents of this country the well-deserved opportunity to apply for U.S. citizenship. Senate Democrats have already pledged to ask the Parliamentarian to reconsider. We need you to contact your members of Congress today and tell them that a pathway to citizenship for longtime immigrant residents including DACA recipients, TPS holders, and agricultural workers needs to be included in the upcoming federal budget.
