On Thursday, May 15, 2014, we held our first clinic date for Lawyers4Vets, a monthly pro bono legal clinic for lower-income Veterans in South Carolina. After just one clinic day, we can already see the great need our volunteer attorneys will serve for many South Carolina Veterans.
Today, with 30,000 South Carolina Veterans living in poverty, our hope is for this clinic to become one more tool available to our veterans, eliminating one more barrier keeping them from the productive civilian life they deserve.
During the first clinic, there were thirteen Veterans served who were in need of advice and assistance with a variety of issues, including:
- Obtaining identification (Social Security, ID, birth certificates)
- Expungements and pardons
- Child support
- Consumer protection
- Simple wills and healthcare power of attorney
We were able to assist not only on site, but were also able to pair Veterans with pro bono attorneys who will work with them on additional legal issues.
We want to thank all of our volunteer attorneys who participated in the first Lawyers4Vets Clinic! We especially want to recognize the team from Bluestein, Nichols, Thompson & Delgado, and Robin McLean from the McLean Law Firm, who stepped up to help with Child Support and Visitation.
The next clinic date will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2014. The clinic, which is by appointment only, will help to provide eligible veterans with legal assistance on obtaining identification, child support and visitation in South Carolina, simple wills, health care power of attorney and even consumer protection issues.
Veterans who would like to make an appointment, you can call toll free 1-877-289-6000 or visit the Dorn VA Medical Center’s website.
Attorneys or law firms interested in supporting the clinic can contact Ashley Thomas or call 803-779-1113.
