Nearly 1 in 3 Americans has a criminal record, with even minor offenses carrying a stigma. With nearly 9 in 10 employers, 4 in 5 landlords, and 3 in 5 colleges screening criminal background checks, this can bring a life sentence of poverty.
We believe that people with criminal records paid their debt to society deserve to live the American dream. Though they made a mistake, it shouldn’t be a life sentence. So we’re working alongside national partners to continue to move South Carolina toward policies that make expungement more accessible for eligible people.
