SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center (SC Appleseed) is honoring Congressman James Spratt as the 2010 Advocate of the Year at a reception at the Cotton Factory in Rock Hill on Thursday, August 26th from 5:00-7:00p.m. S.C. Appleseed’s Board of Directors gives this award annually to an individual who exemplifies a commitment to justice, families, and children in our state. Past recipients include: Ken Suggs, Esq., George Cauthen, Esq. I.S. Leevy Johnson, Esq. and Victoria Eslinger, Esq.
The Honorable John Spratt has served the 5th Congressional District of South Carolina since 1983. Rep. Spratt is a graduate of Davidson College and Yale Law School. Prior to being elected to Congress, he practiced law with the firm of Spratt, McKeown & Spratt, and he served as president of the Bank of Fort Mill. He is chairman of the U.S. House Budget Committee and is the second- ranking Democrat on the U.S. House Armed Services Committee.
Congressman Spratt has been a long time supporter of legal services to the poor and was a founding member of Piedmont Legal Services. During his time in Congress, while fiscally conservative, he has supported programs that assist the disabled and those with low incomes. He has consistently fought to protect the rights of all South Carolinians; therefore, SC Appleseed is proud to be celebrating his many achievements with this award.
