Congressman James E. Clyburn.
Each year the SC Appleseed Board of Directors recognizes a South Carolinian whose life work exemplifies a commitment to justice, families, and children in our state. We are pleased to announce that this year our 2011 Advocate of the Year is Congressman James E. Clyburn.
Congressman Clyburn, who has represented the 6th Congressional District since 1993, currently serves as Assistant Democratic Leader in the 112th Congress, the number three Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives. As a national leader, Congressman Clyburn has worked to respond to the needs of America?s diverse communities. Among his many contributions, he has championed rural communities, supported making higher education more affordable by increasing Pell grants, directed 10 percent of Recovery Act funding to communities 20 percent under the poverty level for the past 30 years, and advanced law measures to resolve historic discrimination issues. Congressman Clyburn has indeed been a champion for those who often don?t have a voice.
Congressman Clyburn will be honored at a special reception on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at 701 Whaley from 5:30p.m.-7:00p.m. and we invite you to join us. Please contact GKinard@scjustice.org for more information and to purchase tickets.
